TA Doesn’t Have a Seat at the Table. Here’s How to Earn One.
When David Marshall joined Comfort Systems USA Midsouth as the company’s sole TA leader, the function was reactive by design. Roles got filled when someone asked. Headcount decisions happened without recruiting at the table. The process existed — it just didn’t matter. What changed wasn’t a new ATS or a bigger team. It was a decision to stop waiting for permission and start speaking the language of the business.
David’s approach was methodical and unglamorous: go to the job sites, wear the PPE, learn what the work actually requires. Turn data into something executives care about — project timelines, manpower costs, the real price of a bad hire or a slow fill. Push to be included in project planning at the blueprint stage, not after the contract is signed. And then prove it, one short-term win at a time, until the skeptics became sponsors. Along the way, he rebuilt the sourcing strategy, introduced AI tools his organization had never heard of, and started showing up in conversations where TA had never been before.
This session is for TA practitioners who know their function is capable of more — and want a concrete playbook for getting there. David shares the mindset shifts, the data moves, and the relationship-building tactics that took him from order taker to indispensable strategic partner. No MBA required. Just the willingness to ask better questions, show up differently, and prove the function’s value before anyone asks.
Attendee Takeaways
- Turn “what” questions into “how” questions. The single mindset shift that moves TA from reactive execution to proactive planning — and how to use it to get upstream of hiring decisions before headcount is even approved.
- Make data your currency. The specific metrics and business-language framing that got Marshall into executive conversations — and how to identify the numbers your leadership actually cares about, even if they’ve never told you.
- Field credibility as a recruiting strategy. Why Marshall puts on a hard hat and visits job sites — and how that kind of operational proximity gives TA leaders the context, relationships, and trust that no dashboard can replicate.
- Use AI to think bigger, not just move faster. How Marshall uses tools like ChatGPT and Copilot not just to automate tasks but to build sourcing agents, stress-test strategies, and push past the standard recruiting playbook — especially in industries where talent is scarce and competition is quiet.
